feeling jew-ish

book, 2024

my relationship with religion has always been a complicated one. my mother is jewish, and my father is christian. neither are very religious, so i grew up exposed to both belief systems and their traditions. they never encouraged one over the other; but, the prominence of christianity always made it feel more “normal”. i did not know many jewish people other than my family, or at least not many that were constantly in my life. my jewish identity is something i still have so many questions about. i know what i believe. i know i am 50% ashkenazi jewish. i know there is still so much i do not know and so much i want to learn about my religion and my ancestry.

for this project, i interviewed five people about their experiences being jewish. each person has their own story behind their jewish identity. the accordian book style of the book allows the commonality of their stories to be acknowledged while still recognizing their unique experiences.
